UCN Week in Review – #GGGBrook – Brexit Stage Left?
Since shortly after its birth, the Undisputed Champion Network has had a great relationship and, in Golovkin: Uncensored, partnership with the middleweight champion of the world Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. But like everyone else this week, we were on our heels when hearing about how welterweight IBF champ Kell Brook was next in line for The God of War.
Around the office at UCN over the last few weeks, there was a tangible buzz for Gennady taking his talents to London to face Chris Eubank Jr. With the British pound falling faster than Amir Khan after Canelo’s overhand right, the price was right for a UCN group trip to the O2 Arena to see Golovkin convert another legendary boxing community by embracing his #BritishStyle.
We even taped a 10 Count about it in late June.
To everyone’s surprise, Matchroom Boxing and its leader Eddie Hearn got fed up with the Eubanks and surprised us all as by finding another often ducked fighter in Kell Brook to step up a quite a few pounds to take on the baddest man on the planet. I have witnessed both men fight in person, Golovkin several times, Brook, at the StubHub outpointing Shawn Porter to win the IBF Welterweight title (in my opinion the challenger did not do enough to dethrone the champion that night in a close fight).
You have to respect Brook for taking a fight on his home turf against the man no one wants to fight, but the announcement still took the air out of the room. Perhaps more exciting, because it will be in front of 20,000 lunatics (a compliment), then Wade and Lemieux and Monroe and Rubio, but a mismatch from corner-to-corner.

From Canelo stepping aside to GGG fighting a smaller man on one side and an expected unification both between Brook and Jessie Vargas now not happening, what looked like a fun boxing fall has turned sour quick. K2 and Matchroom and SKY and HBO and GGG and Brook are going to get us excited for this fight in September, and Golovkin will very likely add the UK (or what is left of it by then) to his legions of loyal global followers.
Here is the best of the week at UCN.
