See you in Sacramento!
OK, you might have heard that there’s this card taking place in Australia with Manny Pacquiao on ESPN and the guess is that many of you will be watching. Well, OK, I get it but if you happen to have a laptop or tablet handy, make sure you log on to ThompsonBoxing.com and/or Facebook Live, where Thompson Boxing presents a card from the Omega Products International in Sacramento, California, that’s headlined by undefeated welterweight Taras Shelestyuk, who faces Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez.
The broadcast starts at 7:00 p.m. PT and Beto Duran and Yours Truly will be on the call.
So yeah, no Pacquiao-Jeff Horn spoilers, please.
Normally, Thompson Boxing hosts its cards at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, or in the city of Corona, but Alex Camponovo, the general manager and matchmaker for the company, explained, “We’ve done shows here at Omega Products (in Corona) for a number of years – 15 years – and we’ve done cards on ‘ShoBox’ and ESPN, along with our regular events. We’re going to have one there in the month of August.
“Omega Products is part of the Thompson Building Materials family. It’s one of (Founder and President) Ken Thompson’s companies and he opened up a plant there about a year ago, so we just wanted to test the waters us there.”
Mr. Thompson, the head of Thompson Boxing, made his money in the construction business. Camponovo says there is a sizable contingent of Ukrainians in the area, “It gives us an opportunity to explore the Northern California market.”
This card is being staged outdoors and will hold just over 1,400 fans. Also on this six-bout card is well-regarded featherweight prospect Ruben Villa, 6-0 (4), who is from nearby Salinas. The hope is to develop Villa into an attraction. Sacramento could be a regular destination for Thompson Boxing and Banner Promotions (which co-promotes Villa).
“It’s part of our plans. So far, we’re close to 80-to-85 percent on our ticket sales, so it’s looking pretty good. (Villa) himself has sold a lot of tickets. He’s only a couple of hours away from home,” said Camponovo on Thursday afternoon. “So yeah, we’ll probably make this a regular occurrence and see how it goes.”
