Report from the Clash in Carson: Golovkin Destroys Rubio; Walters Stops Donaire
WBA middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin, 31-0 (28), made his West Coast debut and the sold out StubHub Center in Carson, California was stoked. Marco Antonio Rubio, 59-7-1 (51), who couldn’t make the contract weight and got off the scale weighing 161.8, entered the ring at 181 pounds. Golovkin rehydrated to 173 but in the end, the weight didn’t matter because Golovkin picked up his 18th straight KO victory, finishing off Rubio in two rounds. Golovkin added the WBC interim middleweight belt to his growing collection of 160-pound trinkets. After the fight, HBO ringside analyst Max Kellerman asked “GGG” who he would like to fight and Golovkin named consensus champion Miguel Cotto (who should avoid him at all costs) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. as possible match-ups.
In a clash for the absolute, true WBA featherweight title, “regular” featherweight champion Nicholas Walters, 25-0 (21), scored a spectacular, sixth round TKO over WBA featherweight “super” champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire, 33-3 (21). The “Axe Man” drilled Donaire with a hard, right counter on the top of the head. Donaire was in with a big, stronger banger in Walters but props to Donaire who stood and slugged and went out on his shield.
