LOS ANGELES (May 7, 2015) –  Tonight, Fairfield, California’s favorite son,  Manuel “Tino” Avila,  (16-0 (7), faces Oxnard’s Erik Ruiz, 13-2 (6), in a junior featherweight bout promoted by Golden Boy Promotions at the Belasco Theater, live on FOX Sport 1’s “LA Fight Club.”

Avila’s original opponent, Rolly Lunas, fell out earlier on this week. “I’m not fighting Rolly Lunas. It seems he has an eye problem or something and wasn’t cleared to fight,” Avila stated. “I’m fighting Erik Ruiz.”

The rangy Avila, who has shown he can be an attraction when fighting in front of his hometown, hopes to stay consistent, fighting not far from where he made his pro debut at the nearby Club Nokia in Downtown Los Angeles. Starting his pro career back in 2010, Tino has seen the quality of his opponents rise and has added to quality wins to his resume with the likes of Ricky Lopez,  Enrique Quevedo, David De La Mora  and Sergio Frias in his last fight. Avila stopped Frias via KO in eight rounds at the Sports Center in Fairfield.

Ruiz should prove a tough cookie, as his only losses have come against the tricky Isaac Zarate and power-punching Jessie Magdaleno, both by decision.

Regarding the change in opponent, Avila commented, “I prepare for any fighter the same way, get ready for what they bring. I’m the [co-]headliner for the show at the Belasco Theater. Diego De La Hoya is also in the show.”

With the fight coming up shortly, is there any sense of pressure to perform? “I feel no pressure. I do well in my own town and have also been featured fighting outside of it.” With room to grow and time on his side, Avila talked about his future plans, “I feel comfortable fighting at 122 pounds still and will move up when and if I do start to have problems making weight. I would like to fight a few more times and then fight for the world title when I have a chance.”

Avila vs. Ruiz is scheduled for  10 rounds.

The co-feature will have featherweight prospect, Oscar De La Hoya’s cousin, Mexicali’s Diego De La Hoya, 9-0 (6), taking on  Guanajuato, Mexico’s   Ramiro “Zurdo” Robles, 12-2-1 (7), in an eight-round bout.

The televised portion of the card will also feature Oscar “El Jagura” Negrete, 8-0 (3), taking on the dangerous veteran Luis “Titi” Maldonado Jr., 36-14-1 (27), in a six-round junior featherweight bout.

Fan favorite Nicolas Arce, 2-0 (1), faces  Marco Alcaraz, 0-5, in a four-round, featherweight swing bout (on-air with time permitting).

FOX Sports 1 will air the fight live tonight and will replay the broadcast again Friday on FOX Deportes.
